David White grew up the youngest of four children in the wide open spaces of Plano, Texas, now one of the most populous suburbs north of Dallas. His childhood was filled with soccer and swimming, family camping trips, sibling rivalries and Sunday church. When old enough, he worked at the local Schwinn bicycle shop, earning money to keep gas in his hand-me-down El Camino. As a kid, David looked up to his sisters but idolized his big brother, who played bass guitar and keyboards in teenage garage bands. Watching his brother pursue his music and then the girls pursue his brother, David was motivated to follow in his footsteps. To that end, he spent hours with headphones on, listening to his brother’s vinyl record collection that included albums as diverse as Little Feat, Steely Dan, Doobie Brothers and Bonnie Raitt. David’s developing style on the acoustic guitar was heavily influenced by the sounds of James Taylor and Dan Fogelberg. He found inspiration in the unconventional tunings of Leo Kottke, the percussive fingerstyle of Michael Hedges, and the technical perfection of Christopher Parkening. During this time, he also taught himself how to play the piano. Though David enjoyed playing the electric guitar and keyboards in his own garage bands, he was most captivated by the resonance of the acoustic guitar. Following high school, David attended Texas A&M University, College Station, where he studied psychology and used his free time to cycle, backpack, and cruise in his ‘67 ragtop Pontiac. Favorite weekends were spent playing his Fender Strat with his brother in The Freddies, a blues band that played in Dallas clubs. Upon graduation, armed with the dangerous combination of a psychology degree and a general lack of direction, David went to work in his dad’s business, loading and unloading delivery trucks. Finally acknowledging to himself his natural grasp of the sciences and his inherent missionary spirit, David applied to medical school. He was accepted to The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, graduating in 1995 with his M.D. degree. His clinical study continued with a pediatric internship at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and a pediatric residency at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, Nashville, Tennessee. He was then invited to join the Brentwood Children’s Clinic, just outside of Nashville, where he continues to practice 15 years later. Board certified in pediatrics, with a natural gift for relating to children and anxious parents, David now also recognized his natural gift as a musical artist. He became a serious student of songwriting, spending countless nights at the Bluebird Café, listening and learning. Ultimately, it was his own well-received performances at this iconic Nashville landmark that led to writing deals with DreamWorks and Universal. Wanting greater artistic freedom to write across music genres, David became an independent singer-songwriter in 2005. Today, David shares his time between the practice of pediatric medicine and songwriting. He and his wife Jessica have three young children. The family lives in Franklin, Tennessee.
